Welcoming a World-Class Scholar: SPs UNY Hosts Visiting Top Professor from the University of Hong Kong

Yogyakarta, 21 April 2026 — The Graduate School of Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (SPs UNY) successfully hosted a Visiting Top Professor program titled “Cognitive Diagnostic Modelling: Mapping the Architecture of Learning” on 20–21 April 2026. The program brought together academics, researchers, education practitioners, and graduate students with a shared interest in the field of educational measurement and evaluation.

The event featured distinguished international scholar Jimmy de la Torre, Ph.D., from University of Hong Kong as the keynote speaker. His participation provided valuable global insights while deepening participants’ understanding of recent advancements in Cognitive Diagnostic Modelling (CDM).

On the first day, the sessions focused on both the conceptual foundations and practical applications of CDM. Prof. de la Torre highlighted a critical shift from traditional assessment approaches toward diagnostic frameworks capable of capturing learners’ mastery of specific cognitive attributes. He further elaborated on essential components of CDM, including theory-driven attribute identification, the construction and validation of the Q-matrix as a bridge between test items and targeted skills, and model estimation techniques such as G-DINA, recognized for its analytical flexibility.

The discussion also addressed key challenges in implementing CDM in real-world contexts, including issues related to data quality, model selection, and the interpretation of analytical results. The sessions were marked by active engagement, particularly as participants explored the application of CDM in formative assessment, enabling the provision of more targeted and meaningful feedback for learners.

On the second day, the program shifted toward a more practice-oriented format through parallel sessions in measurement and evaluation. These sessions allowed participants to further consolidate their understanding while gaining hands-on insights into applying CDM within their respective academic and professional contexts.

This initiative reflects SPs UNY’s continued commitment to facilitating internationally oriented academic forums and strengthening scholarly capacity in the field of educational measurement and evaluation. Through this program, participants are expected to develop more diagnostic, adaptive, and context-responsive assessment approaches in line with the evolving demands of contemporary education.
